The Tomb of Sargeras (formerly the Temple of Elune,[1] [two] too spelled as the temple of Elune,[3] and simply referred to as the Tomb)[4] is a bang-up structure situated on the island of Thal'dranath in the Broken Isles. The Guardian Aegwynn imprisoned the corpse of the Avatar of Sargeras in the deepest parts of the Temple, miles beneath its surface, after she defeated it 800 years ago. After centuries of having been submerged under the sea, the influence of the dark power of the Avatar worked its influence upon the halls of the Tomb, twisting it with fel energy.[5]

The Tomb was raised back to the surface by the warlock Gul'dan during the Second War, but he was torn apart past the demonic guardians within before he could merits the ability contained inside the Tomb. Later withal, during the Third War, the structure was visited by Illidan Stormrage in search of the Centre of Sargeras. Post-obit the defeat of the Burning Legion on the alternate Draenor, the Tomb was reopened by alternate Gul'dan to let the Legion entry into Azeroth in one case more.

History

Located in Suramar,[3] the Temple of Elune was the main temple defended to the worship of the goddess Elune before the War of the Ancients.[6] The roofless center section of the temple was called the Sleeping room of the Moon. The circular rock path leading to the dais in the center of the room was a mosaic blueprint outlining the yearly cycles of the moon. The Chamber was rectangular and filled with dark-blooming flowers.[7]

During the War, the Called-for Legion attempted to open a secondary portal besides the one at the Well of Eternity in the Temple in club to attack the nighttime elves on two fronts. The Highborne used the Pillars of Creation to close the portal and put several magical seals on the Temple.[2]

The Bully Sundering acquired it and nearly of Suramar to exist blasted nether the sea. Millennia later, Aegwynn would battle and managed to defeat the Avatar of Sargeras. She then chose to imprison its corpse inside the sunken Temple because of its Highborne seals which negate fel,[2] earning it a new name. Aegwynn further warded the Tomb of Sargeras so no Azerothian race could enter it, and this is why the spirit of Sargeras that was possessing Medivh afterward summoned the Old Horde to Azeroth in the first identify - orcs were unaffected.[citation needed]

Second State of war

Gul'dan raises the Tomb of Sargeras.

A daemon released from the tomb past Gul'dan.

Centuries after Aegwynn'due south battle, the tomb was raised during the Second War past Gul'dan as a new island.[viii] [9] Gul'dan believed that the trunk of Sargeras contained the power to make him a god (it was, in fact, the promise of the Tomb of Sargeras that led Gul'dan to outset open up the Dark Portal). The warlock led his entire army, formed by the Stormreaver and Twilight'due south Hammer clans, to the islands, thus taking away most a third of the Horde'due south deployed forces. This action ultimately led to the Horde'due south defeat in Lordaeron. Gul'dan himself was later torn apart past the Tomb's demonic guardians, at the very threshold of the Centre chamber, and his armies destroyed past the enraged Black Tooth Grin association.[10] The Black Molar Grin forces were led by Rend and Maim Blackhand, and had been sent by Orgrim Doomhammer, who had been forced to abolish the Horde's assault on Lordaeron in social club to deal with Gul'dan's treachery.[11]

The orcs killed during the battle were eventually raised by the vile magics of the demons,[12] and kept reliving it in their undeath.[13]

Eventually, Teron Gorefiend sent one of his lieutenants, Ragnok Bloodreaver, to accompany Tagar Spinebreaker, Fenris Wolfbrother and their warriors to the Tomb of Sargeras. Their mission was to locate and recollect the Jeweled Scepter of Sargeras. Once inside the tomb, they were confronted by a demon, whom they promptly slew. The demon held the scepter, and information technology was recovered. It was then that Ragnok, the death knight, threatened the orcs with death if they did non help him remember the Heart of Sargeras. Fenris was adamant, even so, and Ragnok was forced to reconsider his decision to venture into the Chamber of the Eye.[14]

Third War

The Tomb of Sargeras in The Frozen Throne.

Many years later, the tomb was visited by Illidan Stormrage who was searching for the Eye of Sargeras to destroy Northrend on Kil'jaeden's orders. Maiev Shadowsong tried to end him from claiming the Eye, just Illidan collapsed the chamber on superlative of her, setting off a chain reaction that started the collapsing of the entire building. Still, Maiev managed to escape.[13]

Backwash

Some fourth dimension later on, the Kirin Tor would clear the naga, its remaining artifacts were given to the Watchers'south custody and the structure was sealed up.[15]

Though his plans on alternating Draenor failed, an alternate version of Gul'dan survived. Under the Legion's command, he was banished to Azeroth to open a gateway for a monstrous invasion forcefulness unlike annihilation the Horde and the Alliance accept ever faced.[sixteen] Subsequently being flung through the Blackness Gate, Gul'dan heard the familiar phonation of Kil'jaeden, who gifted the warlock with the endless knowledge of the Legion and ordered him to travel to the Broken Isles.[17]

The Tomb of Sargeras

On orders from Kil'jaeden, Gul'dan would later on make his way to the Cleaved Isles to open the way for the Called-for Legion to fully invade Azeroth one time over again, in an invasion that dwarfed even the War of the Ancients.[xviii]

After spying on Archmage Khadgar and Warden Maiev Shadowsong, Gul'dan notice a small Alliance rowboat. Within an hour, using Kil'jaeden's directions and fel magic to motility quickly across the water, Gul'dan had reached the island that his other self had raised from the ocean depths many years prior. With ease, he dismantled the cabalistic locks and barriers blocking the entrance into the Tomb of Sargeras earlier blasting the door open and swiftly plunging into the darkness.

Gul'dan encounters his chief once again.

Khadgar and Gul'dan.

Before long thereafter, Khadgar entered the tomb as well after hearing the massive blast caused by the door'due south devastation. After evading several of the mortiferous magical traps laid by Gul'dan, the mage confronted the warlock in a towering chamber, and a furious battle erupted. Jumbo waves of arcane and fel crashed together, threatening to ignite the air around the 2 combatants. Kil'jaeden'south voice angrily told Gul'dan that neither of the two could die this 24-hour interval and that he had to withdraw. Realizing that if he did not obey, he would get cut off from the Legion immediately, the warlock shrouded himself in fel, causing Khadgar's arcane magic to unleash a blinding explosion. When he had opened his eyes again, Gul'dan was gone. A deadly true cat-and-mouse game ensued, with Khadgar taunting Gul'dan in an endeavour to bring him out of hiding while launching blasts of burn at random into the darkness.

Later a lucky shot almost reduced him to cinders, Gul'dan convinced Kil'jaeden to tell him most the ability locked in the tomb and how to unleash it. And then, using this cognition, he began deactivating the 5 arcane seals that had been created in the tomb by the Highborne of Suramar during the War of the Ancients using the five Pillars of Creation. Khadgar noticed this attempt and began sending out arcane elementals to discover the warlock while besides starting to ask if the orc had ever learned of the fate of his master universe analogue. Gul'dan ignored him, continuing to pause the seals until he reached the fifth and concluding ane, which had begun growing more powerful with each passing moment, arcane energy surging into it — a machinery created hundreds of years agone by a female person Guardian of Tirisfal. Khadgar sensed this and created a massive cabalistic wedge and began slamming it into the floor of the chamber. Gul'dan threw his concealing illusion bated, and the boxing between the mage and the warlock erupted once more. Realizing that he could non kill Khadgar and interruption the concluding seal at the same time, Gul'dan attempted to convince Kil'jaeden to infuse him with the tomb'south power, while Khadgar finished his story and revealed the fate of the original timeline's Gul'dan: having been torn apart by the demons he had once served. Gul'dan suddenly realized that he was guaranteed to outlive his usefulness in the Legion's eyes, but in that moment, Kil'jaeden conceded and allowed the energies of the tomb to surge into the orc.

Gul'dan immediately ceased his attack upon Khadgar, instead crushing the concluding seal in a fist of fel burn down. The energies necessary to tear open a rift between Azeroth and the Nether began surging towards the portal buried beneath Thal'dranath, just Gul'dan seized them for himself. Later on a moment of drowning in pain beneath an endless ocean of power, he regained his control and, by lifting only a finger, caused the bedchamber to erupt with overwhelming fury. Khadgar managed to seal himself in ice once more, but Gul'dan simply hurled the ice block through a doorway before collapsing tons of stone on height of it, blocking the entrance. Kil'jaeden instructed Gul'dan to allow the power to flow to the portal. Gul'dan, relishing this act of defiance, refused.

Gul'dan used his new power to attain through his demonic link and speak face up to face with his master, sitting on a throne in some distant world within the Nether. Gul'dan accused him of planning to discard the orc from the get-go. Kil'jaeden denied this, having invested as well much into Gul'dan. He explained that the original Gul'dan died because his betrayal is what sealed the defeat of the first Horde — and by extension, Kil'jaeden and the Legion — on Azeroth during the Second War. When Gul'dan angrily replied that that was not him, Kil'jaeden told him that betrayal was in his nature. Seeing great potential within the orc, nevertheless buried below a short-sighted selfishness, the eredar had dragged Gul'dan to Thal'dranath to lead him to even greater power. The eredar then went on to explain that while Gul'dan had e'er been destined for power, he would never be his ain master; that every creature served a primary, fifty-fifty the Deceiver. Then, he gave the warlock a choice: show himself loyal, return his power to the portal and open the style for the Legion, or beguile his masters yet again to exact his petty vengeance on insignificant mortals before the Legion destroyed him. He left with a closing thought: Gul'dan may call him 'the Deceiver', only Kil'jaeden stated that he had never lied to him. "Not once. Non in this world, and not in yours."

Gul'dan was finally lonely in the chamber. Though he felt sure in his decision, he also felt a speck of self-dubiety growing inside him. Soon, he heard Khadgar, at present joined by Maiev Shadowsong, trying to claw their mode into the chamber. The warlock thought to himself that if they wanted to rush to their deaths, they were free to do then, merely in that moment, Gul'dan realized where his insecurity was coming from. Khadgar had been utterly defeated, yet he was not giving up. Maiev could non stand the archmage, only was at present risking her life to save him. Gul'dan remembered the others who had rushed headlong into battle against the Iron Horde and even Archimonde himself, and realized that he would have to confront every single one of them alone, albeit without a master. Khadgar and Maiev breached the chamber and ran towards Gul'dan. With no effort, he brushed their attacks abroad again and again, yet they kept coming at him. The warlock thought to himself that their stubborn resistance was exactly what he would have to face over and over again; he had no measure of his new power, only he had a measure of theirs. Finally, reluctantly, he let his ability slip away from him and downwards towards the portal, at last allowing the Burning Legion's 3rd invasion of Azeroth to commence. Every bit Khadgar and Maiev dropped to the flooring, Kil'jaeden commended Gul'dan for his choice, and now Gul'dan had something he had never had from the Legion before: their trust.

Khadgar and Maiev ran for their lives, with the Warden heading north to fortify the Vault of the Wardens and Khadgar transforming into a raven to fly east. Equally the archmage glanced back towards the e'er-darkening sky above the tomb, he saw Gul'dan levitating in the middle of the inferno, laughing and pointing towards the fleeing archmage to order several demons to pursue him.[xv]

The demons started tearing at the vault, hoping to reclaim their master's power.[5]

The third invasion of the Called-for Legion commences.

Since the Legion's invasion, fel minions take desecrated this holy place, twisting information technology into their own image. Now, this site hosts a battle that could plow the tide of the invasion. While the Armies of Legionfall engage the fel regular army directly, a small grouping of heroes infiltrates the upper reaches of the cathedral in a desperate hope to return the Custodianship of Aggramar to its resting identify. The Dreadlord Mephistroth commands the Legion forces within the Cathedral and he takes the attempt to infiltrate the Cathedral of Eternal Night as a deeply personal thing. The Tomb of Sargeras is certainly the most important site on the Broken Isles. The tomb, an ancient Kaldorei structure from earlier the Sundering, is constructed of tan stone. Its contempo history has collapsed the tomb in places, and it is unstable. Shifting stones and tunnel collapses are common. Red orcish messages, Gul'dan'southward legacy, mark the walls. The Tomb is perhaps the nearly dangerous identify in the Cleaved Isles. Take a trip here only if y'all remember you are upward to killing some demons.[21]

Description

The Tomb of Sargeras in Lands of Conflict.

The Tomb of Sargeras is a haunted and eerie place. Skeletal and ghostly orcs battle each other ad infinitum. A few Stormreaver warlocks, remnants from Gul'dan's disastrous trek, also occupy the deep places, as do demons, which are particularly prevalent in the Chamber of the Eye, which is the section of the tomb that held Sargeras's body and, until recently, the last remnant of his withered class: the Eye of Sargeras. Heavy rock gates and circular doors battlement the tunnels. Sometimes, stepping onto a platform (outlined in eerie white light) causes such a door to roll to the side. Apparently the Kaldorei liked columns, because they are prevalent in the tomb; some remain whole, but many have collapsed or cleaved. The tomb also contains obelisks, fountains, seahorse statues, archways, coral, seashells, torches, braziers, crates, barrels and fallen stone. Alga slicks many surfaces. In some places, the ruin's original floor is intact: tan stone or brick. In others, the floor is shattered or covered by dirt or seawater.[21]

History

Five hundred years ago, Magna Aegwynn, Guardian of Tirisfal, slew the demon Sargeras. Knowing that the demon-Titan's corpse still had ability, she sought a prophylactic place to entomb information technology. She discovered a Kaldorei ruin deep below the sea, near the Maelstrom, and placed the torso within, believing it to be secure. Time proved her incorrect. Centuries later, Medivh, possessed by Sargeras, convinced the orc shaman Gul'dan to lead his people through the Dark Portal to wage war on Azeroth. Medivh–Sargeras offered Gul'dan a powerful antiquity called the Eye of Sargeras as incentive. The orc grew impatient, though, and through magic and research divined the location of the Tomb of Sargeras. He raised the Broken Isles and entered the tomb. Gul'dan encountered many trials inside the tomb, every bit explained in a record of his experiences — a sort of diary — which he kept by painting orcish runes onto the tomb's walls. Orc forces loyal to Orgrim Doomhammer attacked Gul'dan'southward Stormreavers, and the shaman badly sought the Eye. In the end, he failed, and the tomb's demonic guardians tore him disconnected.

Years passed, and the Third State of war began and concluded. In the anarchy following the conflict, Illidan Stormrage, the Betrayer, traveled to the Tomb of Sargeras. Like Gul'dan, he besides sought the Heart of Sargeras, supposedly intending to use it in a ritual to destabilize and destroy the Lich King's Frozen Throne. The night elf warden Maiev Shadowsong tracked Illidan to the tomb. Within the edifice, Maiev discovered pieces of an artifact called the Orb of Shadow, and when she nerveless the entirety of the object information technology gave her great power. Maiev and her forces confronted Illidan deep within the tomb and interrupted his ritual. Illidan used the Heart to flood the tomb and escaped. Out of all the dark elves, but Maiev had the power to escape death, and the loss of her forces embittered her.[21] [22]

Notes and trivia

  • The Tomb had at least 3 side entrances in Warcraft Three.[13]
  • In Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, the tomb did not appear as a building on the map, and was portrayed in a cinematic as an actual subterranean, relatively primitive rock tomb.
  • In Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, a Dalaran expedition was depicted as having reached the area. They had built internment camps for the Old Horde survivors there and had sealed the entry of the Tomb with two elven runestones and numerous soldiers.[12]
  • When the location was revisited in Warcraft Iii: The Frozen Throne, information technology appeared as a ruined, seaweed-covered building at the eye of the ruins of Suramar. This was retconned in Legion.
  • Gul'dan summons a lot of demon commanders during the battle for the Broken Shore, but originally Garnoth, Fist of the Legion was also supposed to appear among them.
  • During Legion's reveal at Gamescom, 2015, information technology was originally stated that the Pillars of Cosmos were used 12,000 years ago by the Highborne to seal a wound in the earth, before edifice the Temple of Elune over information technology.[23]
  • The compages of the bedchamber of the Avatar reflects the influence of the Pantheon: equally mighty as Aegwynn was, a prison house for the power of the dark titan was not to be solely of her own making.[5]
  • If the player enters the Felstorm to a higher place the tomb, they will be damaged.

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should non be taken equally representing official lore.

  • Even though Aegwynn warded the tomb and so no Azerothian race could enter, dark elves and naga later on entered information technology without being stopped. It is possible that when the Tomb was raised by Gul'dan or re-entered by Illidan, they disabled the protection.
